Thigh High Socks Size Guide

Keeping Thigh-Highs Up All Day
Whether you're at a convention, on set, or just out for the day, the right hold method makes all the difference. Here's what works best depending on what you're wearing.
Socks vs. Stockings — What's the Difference?
Thigh-high socks are knit and have more structure, so they grip the leg better on their own. Stockings are thinner and more slippery, so they almost always need an extra hold method.
Hold Methods
🎀 Garter Belt or Clip Garters
The most reliable option for stockings, and a great decorative choice for socks too. Garter clips attach to the stocking top and hold it in place all day without discomfort. Easy to adjust on the go.
- Best for: Stockings and thinner thigh-highs
- Visibility: Can show under shorter skirts — embrace it as part of the look
- Comfort: Very comfortable with the right fit; choose soft-touch clips to avoid digging
- Cleanup: Handwash or delicate machine cycle

🩹 Silicone Grip Bands
A silicone band sewn or bonded to the sock top grips skin directly — no additional accessories needed. Great for minimalist looks where you don't want any hardware showing.
- Best for: Thigh-high socks with a silicone-top finish
- Visibility: Completely hidden
- Comfort: Works best on dry skin; lotion or oil can reduce grip
- Cleanup: Hand wash; avoid fabric softener on the band as it reduces grip over time
📌 Fashion Tape
Double-sided fashion tape applied to the inside of the sock top can hold thigh-highs in place for a few hours. Best for shorter shoots or events where you won't be on your feet the whole time.
- Best for: Quick shoots, photos, or short-wear events
- Visibility: None
- Comfort: Can feel tight if tape is pulled too firmly; remove carefully
- Cleanup: Use a gentle adhesive remover if residue is left on skin; check sock fabric care label before applying
🧵 Sewn-In Elastic or Alterations
If you're wearing a pair of thigh-highs that fit well but need just a little more grip, a tailor can sew a thin elastic band or silicone ribbon along the top. This is a permanent alteration but gives a custom, all-day hold.
- Best for: Socks you wear frequently and want a long-term fix
- Visibility: None
- Comfort: Excellent once fitted correctly
- Cleanup: Follow the garment's standard care instructions
Care Tips
To keep your thigh-highs looking their best longer:
- Turn socks and stockings inside out before washing
- Use a mesh laundry bag to prevent snags
- Wash on a cold, delicate cycle or hand wash
- Lay flat or hang to dry — avoid the dryer, which can shrink fibres and reduce stretch
- Avoid sharp nails or jewellery when pulling them on
- For stockings, store rolled loosely rather than folded to reduce runs
